An infection of the gums that affects the bone structure supporting your teeth is called gum disease, or periodontal disease. It might cause your teeth to fall out in extreme circumstances. Bacteria (germs) on your teeth that penetrate your gums are the first cause of gum disease. Plaque (film) and tartar (hardened plaque) layers form on your teeth if the bacteria remain there for an extended period of time. Gingivitis, or early gum disease, is caused by this accumulation. Your gums may separate from your teeth and create infected gaps as gum disease worsens. This is periodontitis, another name for serious gum disease. Teeth may become loose and require extraction if the bone and tissue holding them in place deteriorate.
