There are various interpretations of the term "root canal." The actual passages between the pulp and tooth roots that house blood vessels and nerves are referred to. The nerve of a tooth serves only to sense heat, cold, and other stimuli after an adult tooth have broken through the gums. It is standard practice to remove the nerve and the infected pulp inside the tooth when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected in order to stop the infection and the pain it causes. A root canal involves thoroughly cleaning the inside of the tooth and then sealing it. A root canal both removes the infected tooth pulp and sanitizes the tooth's canals. The canal is filled in after the infection has been treated to stop any further infection. Your tooth has been saved, but since the pulp, nerves, and blood vessels have been removed, it is no longer a living tooth.
